Normal is a crime thriller from director Ben Wheatley starring Bob Odenkirk, Henry Winkler, Lena Hedey, Billy MacLellan and Renna Jolly.
A big city lawman is temporarily placed in a small community where he must adjust to a slower pace of life but soon discovers dark secrets within the community that puts him at odds with those in charge leading to a dramatic, action packed confrontation.
That is the plot of the British film Hot Fuzz starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost but by complete happenstance, it is also the exact plot to the latest Bob Odenkirk film, Normal.
The film starts out with Sheriff Ulysses (odenkirk) taking the position of interim sherrif in a small, unassuming Minnesota town called Normal. What could possibly go wrong?
He is struggling with a traumatic event in his past and kind of just given up when a random event makes it clear that the town hides a dangerous secret.
The opening scene does preempt the story and in my opinion, reveals a little too much early on.
The first part of the film is pretty slow going and its just a quirky Midwest town but the second part really jumps feet first into Nobody territory as the bodycount and carnage add up.
If you like bob odenkirk in Nobody, didn’t mind the pacing and vibe of Eddington and frankly just want to see Hot Fuzz go ‘merican because that really is what we have here albeit without the brilliant humour of Hot Fuzz.
A fun film that doesn’t take itself too seriously but is clearly taking inspiration from much supiror material elsewhere.
